Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and SECW on the Path to a Just Transition in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) is an international non-profit research and policy organization dedicated to addressing environmental and development challenges. A just transition is a key aspect of shifting to clean energy, encompassing the social and economic needs of local communities. One of the discussion topics at the 2nd SECW conference was precisely the just transition—how to shape a better and fairer future for Bosnia and Herzegovina through joint efforts. Saša Solujić, Project Manager, participated in the panel “Creating a Just Transition” on the second day of the SECW conference, focusing on selected pilot projects and local communities. During the panel, Saša and her fellow speakers discussed ongoing activities, projects, best practices, and necessary next steps toward achieving a just transition, particularly in coal-rich regions. She shared experiences on current projects contributing to a just transition and highlighted the development opportunities that arise from the transition process. Bernardas Padegimas, Team Leader for Environmental Policy and Strategy (EPS team), was one of the panelists on the third panel of the first conference day, titled “A Strategic Approach to the Development of E-Mobility in the Private and Public Sector with a Focus on Transport Decarbonization.” During the panel discussion, Bernardas presented positive practices from Sweden that could serve as a model for Bosnia and Herzegovina in developing e-mobility. As the general partner of SECW, the Stockholm Environment Institute hosted a side event during the 2nd Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week, dedicated to the topic “BiH Sustainable Transition: World Café & Swedish Fika.” This interactive event gathered participants from various sectors to exchange ideas and solutions for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s sustainable transition in a relaxed atmosphere, inspired by Sweden’s traditional coffee break—fika. The organizers of Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week visited SEI representatives and presented a token of appreciation for their collaboration on the 2nd SECW. They reflected on the event, exchanged experiences, and discussed ways to strengthen and enhance cooperation for the 3rd Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week. We look forward to collaborating on the 3rd Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week, which will take place from September 22–26, 2025. Building a together an energy-efficient and sustainable future.
